How to Format Blogger Template

One advantage of using Blogger to create a blog is the built-in template and design tools that let you format the look of your blog without the need for in-depth Web design knowledge. Blogger's "Template Designer" feature allows you to change your blog background, adjust its page dimensions and make other changes, and then save them as new custom templates.

1. Log in to your Blogger account using your Google ID and password. On the blog listing screen, click the link to view the blog you wish to customize the template for.

2. Click the "Design" link on the Blogger toolbar that appears at the top of your blog. This takes you to the Blogger blog design customization screen.

3. Click the "Template Designer" link near the top of the blog design customization screen, just below the "Design" tab. The Blogger Template Designer will load, displaying the template tools at the top of the page and a preview of your blog at the bottom.

4. Select a template from the "Templates" previews at the top of the Blogger screen. The preview of your blog will update with the new template; as this is only a preview, the changes you see are not affecting your actual blog at this time. Choosing a template is a good starting point for custom formatting for your blog.

5. Choose the "Background" link to view the background image and color theme options for the template. Click the background image preview to select a new image or upload a custom picture, pressing the "Done" button when your selection is complete. Select the color theme preview to make adjustments to the general color theme of your blog.

6. Click the "Adjust Widths" link to make adjustments to the size of the elements on your blog page. The preview will change to show only the outlines of page elements, allowing you to see how their boundaries change as you make adjustments.

7. Press the "Layout" link to select a different overall blog layout. You can change the layout of both the body and footer of your blog, clicking the appropriate layout selections to make changes in the preview. Installed Blogger gadgets can also be moved by dragging them to new locations within the preview window.

8. Click the "Advanced" link to make changes to specific elements of your blog. Options include changing the typeface, size and color of fonts that appear in different locations, adjusting the color of specific page elements independently from the color theme and selecting the colors used to display links, visited links and active links.

9. Select the "Apply to Blog" button in the top right corner of the screen to apply the changes you've made to the Blogger template, making your actual blog appear the same as the current preview. If you don't wish to apply the changes, choose the "Back to Blogger" link to discard them and return to the blog design customization screen.
